Seems the US has once again discovered Canada and this time it’s not for our natural resources. Or maybe it is. In the weekend Style section of the New York Times no less, it is reported that “Justin Trudeau, the muscular, blue-eyed, social media-savvy son of the former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau” may be grabbing the headlines “but he is far from the only one burning bright in the north.” The profile piece begins by introducing us to the popularity of Xavier Dolan, a twenty-six year old Quebec based film maker who was apparently “a darling of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.”
According to the Times, “an expanse once stereotyped as the home to square-jawed Mounties and beer swilling hosers” has produced a new generation of superstars including Weeknd, film Director Sarah Polley, fashion designer Tanya Taylor, Drake and of course, The Biebs. It does manage to acknowledge that this isn’t all just recent history. We have been there before with the likes of Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell Leonard Cohen and, in a category all his own, Neil Young. Writer Peter Stevenson also recognizes our deep contribution to comedy with the likes of Mike Myers, Lorne Michaels, Martin Short and others. And he also concedes that “we’ve always had Frank Gehry.”
The Times also recently listed Toronto as one of the top cities to visit in 2016. In addition to our legendary talent and intriguing cities — Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver — Canada also boasts some astonishing landmarks and natural wonders — the fjords of Newfoundland, The Bay of Fundy — Niagara Falls and the Pacific Northwest.
